First I want to clarify that without question some of us will find ourselves in situations that no matter how sovereign we are, or supportive our employer is, we can't just work ourselves out of. That's expected, and there is nothing wrong with that whatsoever. I sincerely hope that anyone who finds themselves in that place takes all the time they need, and uses every resource available to them to the fullest in order to get back on their feet.
The rest of this might ruffle some feathers.
I've read a lot of articles, and heard a lot of people complaining lately about how their organizations have failed them when it comes to their own mental health........That sentence doesn't even make sense to me no matter how many times I read it.
The job of a first responders comes with a plethora of challenges that the majority of other careers can't hold a candle to, and we knew this when we signed up. If you didn't, I guess you fast forwarded the scenes in seemingly every cop movie where the burnt out/hot headed cop is barely able to make it out of bed.
My issue with the statement that our organizations are letting us down, is that from what I see, there is an embarrassingly small number of us who are even comfortable having a conversation about personal development/mental health, let alone actually willing to put in the leg work to improve it, or take advantage of whatever our organizations might offer.
WE NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OURSELVES FROM DAY ONE
Now don't get me wrong, is there more our organizations could do to support us? HELL YES, and in a lot of different ways.........but when my truck gets stuck in the mud, I don't blame the road, I blame myself for trying to plow through a situation that demanded more than just flooring it and hoping for the best.
We have to take an honest look in the mirror and be able to check ourselves on a regular basis, but how many actually do? If you're not, start right now.
If you want some help on this, or want to start increasing your sovereignty, don't hesitate to reach out, Shoot me an email, or jump on one of our monthly calls and start taking some responsibility for yourself.
