Imagine your DREAM life, DREAM house, DREAM family, and being surrounded by your DREAM possessions. Find what that looks like in your head. Take your time, enjoy what that feels like.....Got it?
Now imagine a panicked neighbour comes running up and warns you that there is a wildfire just on the other side of the horizon. It's coming to take everything you have......and burn it to the fucking ground.
What do you do? Do you stay put and hope the fire miraculously misses you? Or do you get your shit together, and prepare to fight it?
That is what I believe the current dilemma toward police mental health and wellness to be. we are guilty of resting on our innate gifts (strength, resiliency, courage) that got us to where we currently are in life. Entirely reactive, and waiting for a seemingly inevitable PTSD diagnosis to strip it all away. No emphasis, or teachings on how to legitimately become cops that are healthy, resilient, and dripping with integrity.
So what do you do? Do you blindly carry on living life, enjoying what you have, and just wait for it all to potentially (statistics say it almost certainly will) burn to the ground around you? Or do you begin building a solidified defence to keep the fire at bay, until it gives up and moves on to the next easy target?
Since you've read this far, I think we both know the answer.
The vision I have is for fellow cops to get started on the path to a new outlook/excitement for all the wellness related tags you've probably grown to find intimidating or annoying. Self development, inner work, mindset, mental health, breathwork, mindfulness, movement practices, meditation, shadow work, all that good stuff!
Your life doesn't have to suffer, just because you've chosen this job. I'll be the first to confess that it's really fucking challenging and takes a lot of effort to stay above the line, but that effort is a choice, and it's worth it.
It's time to end the stigma against working on ourselves, and begin to get excited about ourselves thriving both in, and out of uniform.
The path will start with an entry course focused on increasing self awareness and vitality, and upon completion you'll be given an invitation to join a new breed of healthy, thriving cops. We call it The Nine8, and our goal is to bring together cops who want more than the current average of 5yrs of life after retirement. Cops who want to be the man/woman that their family deserves NOW. To be the person who walks with intent, who embraces both their savageness, and their softness. One that is part of a private community of like minded peers ready to offer support however they can, and whenever it's needed, and to be held accountable when they’re slipping. We'll have online zoom calls each month as a group, and have guests join us on monthly basis to push us further.
Enough of numbing out and going it alone, that mentality created the stigma that we are here to end!
