Have you been "should'ing" on yourself?
Often we get lost in a cycle of negative self talk, where unbeknownst to us, we are constantly putting pressure on ourselves.
It's easy to go unnoticed, and can be misunderstood by many as being optimistic or trying to create a positive change. It looks like this:
"I won't go out tonight, I SHOULD get a good nights sleep instead"
And sometimes, it looks (and feels) a lot rougher.
"I SHOULD do something fun, but I'm just so fucking overwhelmed".
My personal favourite that I hear a lot in our first responder world:
"I should meditate, but that's for pussies".
Well that sounds like a lot of fun, not to mention something you will actually do doesn't it?
"Should" isn't the only culprit here. Do these sound familiar?
"I NEED to start sleeping better"
"I HAVE to get in better shape"
"I've GOT to figure this shit out!"
Let's be honest, we get enough pressure from our day to day work shifts, so why in the hell do we insist on doing it to ourselves on top of it?
Because we don't know there's another way.
How much of your education did you spend learning about the impact that your language has on you, your world, and your wellbeing? Unless correct spelling and punctuation counts then my answer to that question is sweet fuck all.
Inevitably continuous pressure language in our self talk will beat us down, and leave us with a severe lack of motivation/self confidence.
Lets fix this!
