Doctor number 2 is the one we check in with when we find ourselves feeling "stuck", or notice that all too common "resting bitch face" is starring back in the mirror. An appointment with Dr Happy can be as simple or as in depth as you want it to be, or as your schedule permits.
Every little bit counts with this one, from simply switching your stimulus intake from serious to light hearted (ex: political news versus stand up comedy) once a day, to making a decision to have FUN with the family instead of just having TIME with the family. I'll provide an example of that last one, what if instead of coming home from work and watching a movie with family (which you will likely fall asleep during anyways). You came home from work and had a 20 minute Nerf Gun battle extravaganza with family? Sometimes we have to make a choice and decide how we can accomplish multiple things at once. Swapping out lame activities that leave us stuck, with ones that truly light us up and force us to move and laugh is exactly that. And anyone with kids or pets has access to this quick hit from Dr Happy anytime they CHOOSE to.
Other examples of this would be insuring we set aside legitimate time for our hobbies, whatever they may be. Even if it's 30mins a day that's great, as long as you feel uplifted from having done it versus depleted. We'll get to the hobbies we love that leave us exhausted (in a good way) soon. That's for another Dr to supervise.
That's the biggest thing to think about with Dr Happy in my mind, we want these to be activities that invigorate us, not empty us. As a society, our current temptation is to go all out, all the time. I get it, it's easy to fall into that trap. I sure as hell have. But what can we do that leaves our tank higher than before?
Take a minute and think. Can you list what Dr Happy can (or hopefully already does) look like for you? What lights you up? What brings a smile to your face? What makes you laugh?
Once you have some things in mind and on paper. lets take a look at the basics:
Why book an appointment with Dr Happy?
- Feeling "blah", noticing yourself being serious or having difficulty goofing off with friends/family, resting bitch face.
What does an appointment look like?
- PLAY! Fulfilling hobbies. Fun stimulus versus stressful stimulus (comedy instead of horror movie)
When to book an appointment?
- Anytime! Especially at the start of days off or when you know you will have some family time ahead. Set yourself up to take full advantage of that time, not in it while wishing you were feeling lighter.
