Demystifying Mindfullness

Oct 07, 2022

On October 20th, at 2000hrs PST this month's free workshop is going to tackle the often misunderstood, and overly complicated topic of mindfulness.

Everybody tells you to practice it, but what the fuck is it?

First off, for the vast majority of us, it's not attempting to mimic that picture of the Tibetan monk sitting perfectly still atop a mountain peak, or the yogi on the beach in full lotus at sunset.

Simply put, mindfulness is a practice (that comes in many, many forms) that results in helping you not lose your shit when it's about to hit the fan.

To give you the opportunity to respond versus blindly react to a situation or stressor.

These practices come in many different forms including the one that so many of you tell me is unobtainable or daunting.......meditation. Scary right? We'll not only discuss, but experience why this is, and how we often set ourselves up for failure before we even attempt to "meditate".

What if instead of snapping at your kids or spouse, you noticed yourself about to do so and were able to respond in a calmer, and fair way?

What if when that person cut you off on your commute, instead of becoming furious and spending the remainder of your drive/start of your shift as a victim, hyper escalated and stressed from that heinous act, you simply accepted that it happened. Realizing that more than likely the driver just made a small mistake and didn't see you. What if just as quickly as it happened, you were fine with it?

The juice is worth the squeeze with this one. Trust me.

What's with the picture of us around the fire?

Lately my mindfulness practice includes 10-30 minutes of daily attempts (often failed ones) at starting fire without a lighter or match.

In this attempt, which was successful with just a rock and chunk of steel by the way, Mati helped.

And let's be honest, it's cute AF.
