"Show me a garden of words, and I'll show you a garden of weeds"
I make a legit effort not to overload myself with the messaging from others in this space in fear of echoing what others are saying, and to avoid the thought paralysis or static that comes when I bring in too much information. That being said; when I do, two things are very clear for me:
1. I am amazed and grateful for how many others are putting themselves out there with the intention to better the first responder community and evolve it from where we are now (it's fucking hard, I see you, and I'm proud of you. Keep going!).
2. It's the popular opinion (and being pushed really hard) that just talking about health and wellness and mental health will shift the narrative, and allow us to break through our blocks and achieve our goals. To break the stigma.
Number 1 is beautiful.
Number 2 is bullshit.
This might irritate some of y'all, but I gotta say it:
Talking and reading won't get us there.
I compare this to when Charlie said to Maverick, "it takes a lot more than just fancy flying". We can use all the words we want to describe how tough a situation is, read all the books, or explain to the end of time how we got there and how hard it is, but....
The words won't get you out of it. The words won't change the stigma.
Action gets us through it. Action gets us out of it.
If you think just hitting the thumbs up on that victim mentality riddled "mental health" meme, listening to someone talk about how hard it is to be a first responder on a podcast, or reading about why you feel so stuck without learning how to shift, is going to change something, you're wrong, and we shouldn't be telling people otherwise.
Yes it creates awareness that we have a lot of real serious problems in our community, but it only makes the wall we have to climb over that much more daunting.
It's going to take dedication. It's going to take our peers seeing the results we get, and them getting curious as to what we've been doing to feel so good. It's going to take a foundation of tools/knowledge. Most of all, it will take a commitment to where we want to be and how we want to FEEL. That might seem overwhelming when you've lost sight of how good it can be, but.....
ACTION DISPELLS OVERWHELM.
Putting in "The work" is what allows us to break through, to fucking thrive.
Going to a psych/therapy appointment, can be a game changer, but only if you are going with the same mindset that you go to the gym with. To put in the work and strive toward something.
It's easy to get caught in a routine of a free monthly therapy appointment to talk about your shit, and then spend the days between sporadic appointments feeling even more stuck and sorry for yourself without learning any legitimate ways to shift out of that.
You have to want to get out of it, and then take it upon yourself to get there.
The same can be said with working with me, or any of the other high level coaches out there. I can get you unstuck, but only if you want to be.
You gotta do the work.
Doing "The work" looks something like this. It's taking a course (doesn't have to be The Nine8, but I highly recommend it), it's hiring a coach (again, doesn't have to be me, but I highly recommend it) it's saying no to something or someone that holds you back, it's making the healthy choices, it's being curious and trying/learning new things to build your foundation, it's embracing the hard shit so you get to embrace ALLLLL THE GOOD SHIT, and it's putting your health above all else so you can experience life the way it can be.
The way you want it to be.
Want to get unstuck?
Let's get to work.
The Nine8 starts again in September. Click here and book a free call, let's talk!
