A Process For 2023 Goals

Jan 08, 2023

What do you want yours to look like?

The tendancy is to often look at what we can either add or remove from our lives, or what we could be better at (ie; drink less, eat better, excercise more, etc). That's lame, and primarily why I've failed at attaining goals in the past.

What if instead of thinking about things or behaviours you can add to, or subtract from your life, you imagine what your life feels like when you're in that place you want to be. Whether that's to drop a few lbs, go on a fancy vacation, save some money, or get that BJJ blue belt, try this quick little excercise (for the sake of simplicity we'll say we want to become more flexible):

- Imagine your goal

- Grab your phone and set a timer to take a couple minutes to close your eyes and legitimately envision what it feels like having accomplished that goal. To be living it. Feel what your body feels like now that you're far more flexible than a few months ago? How are your thoughts differant now than before? How has your life changed from accomplishing that goal?

- ex; I feel quick, my posture has improved, those little aches and pains are gone and my energy has increased drastically. I seldom decline my kids invitiation to play anymore, etc, etc etc

- write out what it felt like, and answer the question: "what does accomplishing this mean about me?"

- read it out loud.....seriously

Did it feel like something you actually want to focus on? Fantastic! Now you can work backwards and build out the steps on how to achieve it, instead of focusing solely on the things you need to take away or be better at to accomplish whatever yours may be.

Sometimes doing this process will show you that you don't actually want or need to accomplish whatever it was. That maybe it's more of a surface level desire than something you truly want. In that case perfect, we don't need to waste our time on it.

Start thinking of a new one and repeat the process......you'll know it's right when the feels come up during the last step.

Having a rock solid mindset and accomplishing your goals becomes a hell of a lot easier once you start to really envision, and feel the results of that effort. There's no immediate plus side to anything we do that's hard, that's what makes it so damn tempting to give up on it.

Thoughts, comments, concerns? Let's chat about it.

FYI - my 2023 is going to look a heck of a lot like the picture above. Workshops and training. Every month.

Feels damn good too.
