On the heels of recent podcast interview, and building up our brains ability to catch and recognize the good shit, try this journaling exercise right now:
Grab a piece of paper and a wand (also known as a pen/pencil)
Grab your phone.
Set a timer for 5 minutes.
You have 5 minutes……don’t act like you don’t.
Set the timer.
Hit start.
Without scrolling down any further, list in point form why you love being a first responder.
Go.
- Helping People (regardless of who they are or what they’ve done……think about that)
- Freedom to go where you want when you want
- Being part of a team
- Being “the one” in your community
- Interacting with the community
- The random waives for no reason
- The random head nods for no reason
- Quiet mornings
- Knowing that you have an impact regardless of what the media or social groups might say
- Training (we get to drive fast and shoot guns (even if they’re just glorified water guns for you fire fighters out there…….sorry)
- coffee whenever, whereever with whoever
- the opporunity to calm people
- the opportunity to be a change maker and shift someones perspective.
- the opporunity to be a role model
- the kit (don’t act like ya’ll don’t love some tactiCOOL gear)
- how good a solid post night shift sleep feels
- 4 day work weeks
- getting shopping done when the stores are empty on your mid week days off
- Being able to surprise your school age kids with random trips and fun things on days off instead of going to school
- getting paid!
That’s what I got. How was it for you?
My experience is that it can be tough at first, but once you get a couple down, all of a sudden it starts a damn avalanche of good shit! If the timer didn’t go I could have absolutely kept going.
I recommend doing this excercise a couple times a week on anything/everything.
Examples: What I love about my wife…….What I love about being a dad………What I love about my dog………..What I love about myself (for real, do that one)………
Next article we will talk about what this does to assist in the rewiring of our brain that I mentioned previously.
Have fun with it, there are no wrong answers.
